The 30-second version: A medium-roast single origin with light natural chocolate flavoring. Brew at 195–200°F — a touch cooler than plain coffee — at 1:16. If you're adding milk, brew stronger (1:14), because the cocoa notes fade behind milk in a light cup. Excellent hot, as a mocha base, or over ice.
What makes this coffee different
This is our take on the Dubai chocolate profile: a specialty-grade medium roast carrying natural chocolate flavoring all the way through the cup — chocolate-forward, softly sweet, clean finish, without the bitterness or artificial aftertaste of cheaper flavored coffees. It's the afternoon cup for when plain coffee feels boring but a syrupy latte feels like too much.
Two things to know about flavored coffee in general: the flavoring is delicate, so it rewards slightly cooler water and a careful hand. And flavor compounds fade with time, so this is a drink-it-fresh coffee — buy the size you'll finish in a few weeks.
Match your grind
- Whole Bean — grind fresh per method below.
- Standard — drip machine, pour-over.
- Coarse — French press, cold brew.
- Espresso — espresso machine or moka pot. Makes a superb mocha base.
Whole-bean grind targets: drip/pour-over = medium (sea salt), French press = coarse (breadcrumbs), espresso = fine (table salt), cold brew = extra coarse (peppercorns).
The recipes
Drip machine — the everyday cup.
1:16 (2 tablespoons per 6 oz), Standard or medium-fresh grind, water at 195–200°F. If your machine runs hot with no temp control, that's fine — just don't let it sit on the hot plate; decant into a thermal carafe.
Pour-over — the cleanest chocolate.
20g coffee, 320g water at 197°F, medium-fine grind. Bloom 45 seconds, slow spiral pours, finish around 3:15. The clean finish this coffee is known for shows best here.
French press — the dessert cup.
1:15 (30g to 450g), Coarse grind, 200°F water, 4-minute steep. Full-bodied, round, unapologetically dessert-like. Brew it after dinner and drink it black first — then decide if it needs anything. It won't.
Espresso / moka pot — the mocha base.
18g in, 36g out in 25–30 seconds. Pull it a touch shorter (ristretto-ish, 30g out) if drinking straight — flavored espresso can turn sharp at long ratios. As a mocha base: double shot + 6 oz steamed milk + nothing else. The chocolate is already in the bean.
Iced — holds up to dilution.
Brew double-strength hot (1:8 — 30g coffee to 240g water) directly over a full glass of ice. The chocolate flavor is sturdy enough to survive the melt, which is exactly why this one works iced when delicate single origins don't. Or cold brew: 1:10, extra-coarse, 12–16 hours in the fridge, strain.
With milk — brew stronger.
The one rule from our own tasting notes: cocoa flavor fades behind milk in a light cup. For lattes or milky iced coffee, dose up to 1:14. The cup stays balanced instead of turning into warm milk that vaguely remembers chocolate.
The thing most people get wrong: too hot, too long
Flavored coffees punish over-extraction more than plain ones — the flavoring goes from "chocolate" to "perfumey" when the water's too hot or the brew runs long. Keep water at 195–200°F, keep total contact time in normal ranges, and never let brewed coffee stew on a hot plate. If your cup tastes sharp or artificial, temperature is the first suspect, not the coffee.
Dial it in
- Sharp or perfumey → cooler water (195°F), slightly coarser grind.
- Weak, especially with milk → dose up to 1:14.
- Muddy or flat → grind fresher, or check the bag's age (see below).
- Oily residue in the grinder → flavored beans run slightly oily; run a tablespoon of plain rice or grinder-cleaning tablets through monthly. (Uncooked rice works in a pinch — then grind a sacrificial spoonful of coffee to purge.)
Storage
Flavored coffee stales faster than unflavored — the flavor compounds are volatile. Sealed bag, room temperature, away from light. Once opened, finish within 2–3 weeks for the full chocolate effect. This is the real argument for the 12oz bag over the 5 LB unless you're brewing for a crowd.
The ritual
Afternoon-slump rescue. Pair it the way we do: a dark chocolate square, an almond croissant, a quiet twenty minutes. No syrup required — the cup already went there.
